The Metaverse

On 2 May 2021, in her article ‘Defining the Metaverse Today’ in Forbes, Cathy Hackl asked 20 professionals to share their definitions and perspectives on the metaverse. Their answers were nothing short of diverse. Cathy concludes the article with: “In the next decade, technology will accelerate at an exponential rate and our physical and digital lives will converge even further. As professionals across industries and as brands and companies seek to be part of the future, they too might need to ask themselves what the metaverse is.” I think she is right. If you want to play a role in the Metaverse, you better get some clarity about what the Metaverse should be for you and your organisation.
I personally think it is not sufficient to describe the Metaverse, based on specific, known technologies such as AI, VR or AR. Nor will it suffice to simply state that it will be like Ready Player One. If history has taught us one thing, it is that the future is construed by presently unknowns, including those in technology. The only constant factor in the present and future though is humanity and the things that make us feel human.
While working with my business partners on the inception of Straight Fire, humanity and human emotions became the pillars for our project. It is therefore understandable that eventually, this has become our definition of the Metaverse.
“ The Metaverse is a continuously changing, decentralised, creator-driven ecosystem, without physical or spacetime limitations, where humanity and technology co-exist in a balanced, symbiotic relationship, enabling humanity to experience the real in the digital.”
And obviously, in this continuously changing and decentralised environment, opinions may, and probably should, differ. I would love to hear your thoughts. So, don’t be shy and share your thoughts on the Metaverse. After all, the future is shaped by everyone of us.
